Abstract

The article provides a socio-philosophical analysis of the cultural dimension of sustainable development in the context of modern scientific discussions on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The position is substantiated that the implementation of the idea of sustainability cannot be reduced to economic, legal or technological mechanisms, since it assumes a long-term perspective and the principle of intergenerational responsibility, which are formed through cultural codes and practices. Based on a critical review of scientific approaches, three basic representations of the relationship between culture and sustainable development are considered: “culture in sustainable development”, “culture for sustainable development” and “culture as sustainable development”. It is proposed to single out an additional analytical representation – “culture through sustainable development”, which focuses on the procedural and transformational nature of culture as a medium for implementing sustainability in everyday socio-cultural practices. It is shown that culture is a key factor in the integration of social, economic and environmental dimensions of development, providing normative legitimacy and semantic concretization of the Sustainable Development Goals in specific socio-cultural contexts.
