PHILOSOPHICAL CONCEPTS ABOUT THE LEGITIMACY OF AUTHORITY IN KIEVAN RUS’

The article provides a philosophical analysis of the key principles of power legitimacy during the Kievan Rus’ period, enabling a reconstruction of medieval perceptions regarding the nature, sources, and mechanisms of justifying political dominance in an early state society. Particular attention is paid to traditional and sacral methods of legitimation, such as genealogical succession and the religious sanctification of power through baptism, ecclesiastical anointing, and the concept of the prince as a «servant of God» or «God’s anointed» which found vivid expression in the works of Metropolitan Ilarion and other historical monuments. The role of sacral space and the symbolism of power are examined. The study highlights how perceptions of «legitimacy» combined divine gift, historical heritage, and elements of a social contract. The research emphasizes the universal significance of these ideas for understanding the evolution of power concepts in European medieval culture, where the sacral and historical justification of authority served as a bridge between the ancient legacy, Byzantine influence, and indigenous Slavic traditions of popular sovereignty.
