Abstract

This article presents a qualitative study of academic social responsibility in the context of the war in Ukraine. Based on interviews with teachers of Ukrainian universities, the study identifies two main approaches to understanding and implementing social responsibility: the “communicative” approach of expanding interaction with students and colleagues and the “academic” approach of producing new knowledge and engaging students. Both approaches require clear criteria for defining social responsibility and commitments to promote social justice and human rights. The article emphasizes the importance of fostering a cultu re of social responsibility in education, especially in the face of global challenges such as internationalization, mobility, democratization, diversification, and commercialization. The experience of the war in Ukraine 2014- 2023 and its consequences is a vivid example of the importance of social responsibility in education and can serve as a model for other countries facing similar challenges.
